Nearly 40 shops nationwide defied Easter trading laws to open during the long weekend.

Most shops must remain closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday or face a fine of up to $1000. Exemptions apply for convenience, souvenir and duty free stores, pharmacies and shops in premises where there are bona fide shows or exhibitions.

Despite the fine, 22 shops opened on Good Friday and 17 yesterday - one up on last year.

The Department of Labour will decide whether to prosecute.

Is it just me who recognises the clear infringement of both an individuals human and common law rights in relation to Easter Trading Laws. The Dept of Labour seeks to enforce a piece of legislation that infringes common law through the application of church law. I raised this issue recently and as expected the IQ of those working at The Dept of Labour could not debate the merits. I would be delighted to support any retailer in taking legal action 'against both the Crown and its agency the Dept of Labour' in relation to Easter Trading.
