Police are investigating reports that four shots were fired on the Otangarei Neighbourhood Policing Team base in Whangarei early this morning.

Police say no one was in the building at the time but the building received damage to its walls and windows.

Relieving Whangärei/Kaipara area commander Inspector Tracy Phillips says the incident is concerning for police.

"The Neighbourhood Policing Team is working well with the Otangarei community and we are supporting them in every way we can,” says Ms Phillips.

“We will not tolerate this sort of action and will not be intimidated by anyone who chooses to do this."

Police are conducting a scene examination today.
