New Zealand issues passports that are valid for five years, which changed from 10 years in 2005, bringing us in line with over 140 countries internationally.
Most New Zealanders have passports, and most have experienced the frustration of the costly five-year renewal.
With the Government processing more than 600,000 passports every year, it comes as no surprise they have a massive surplus.
