Six Sri Lankan men caught by Australian authorities while trying to get to New Zealand have staged a protest inside a packed immigration detention centre at Christmas Island.

The men were on their way to New Zealand to claim asylum when they were intercepted in early April in the Torres Strait, north of Queensland.

The Australian newspaper has reported the group's protest began on October 30 when one of the men climbed a light pole and stayed there until he was talked down eight hours later.

The six men are being housed in the detention centre's "red block" – built by the former government of John Howard to house the most dangerous and unstable detainees.

They are fighting Australian government plans to send them back to Sri Lanka.

There were 1160 people being held on Christmas Island as of Tuesday, most of them in the detention centre or under guard at a family compound.

Some people think that refugees decide to leave their country just for the fun of it, and move to a totally strange land just to bother the people living there. This is just outreagous, it seems that no one has stopped to think the situation these people may be in, to take desperate meassures that can lead them to death while trying to reach to the countries that have signed international agreements to receive refugees, but when they finally get there, they just slam their doors on their faces. Shame on Australia for trying to avoid their agreements and send these people somewhere else. Shame on NZ too, for not being the greater country in this situation, and accept these poor souls. I wish the best to these HUMAN BEINGS that deserve better treatment, who are just guilty of being born in a conflictive country and have no right to choose where to live, although it is stated in the human rights that a person is free to live anywhere.
What full of crap this world is!
