Ric O’Barry was the man who caught and trained the dolphin who starred in the 60s hit TV show Flipper. But when Flipper died in his arms O’Barry had a radical change of heart and embarked on a mission to free all dolphins from captivity. It’s a dangerous mission that takes him to Japan, where he tries to stop an annual slaughter of dolphins. 60 Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett investigates.

yes, the way these dolphins were killed was not humane, please remember to spell correctly, which is why it should stop but they are being killed for food, their meat is sold in Japanese markets for consumption but of course it is full of toxic mercury and should not be touched. Like I said this issue is very complex and cannot be argued from only one point. & yes there have been anecdotal accounts of dolphins protecting people from sharks it may be too generic to say that they did it because they 'wanted' too, on the flip side there are also rare cases of people perhaps unintentionally being hurt by dolphins.

There are people out there that don't have any type of compassion for any animal nor humans, they are a couple of sandwitches short of a picnic so to speak. I don't beleive in killing anything, what gives humans the right to take any life. Watching the slaughter of those dolphins made me want to vomit, how discusting and shame on all of you that condone that sort of killing, and Karma will catch up with you, the only cockroaches are them brainless selves. And i doubt it's because Dolphins are a rare species that this makes people so sick, Id say it has something to do with how intelligent Dolphins are and that they have been knowen to protect people from sharks.

this is a reply to M. no matter how poor someone is there is never an excuse for that kinda of cruelty. obviously not all the japanese are involved or even agree with what goes on there. Its not just about killing the dolphines its about how they are being killed. They are NOT killed humanly, they suffer!! I do not support the killing of any animal as i am a vegetarian, but this is worse than killing in a meat works because they are not killing for food or killing them humanely and that is what makes it so wrong.

My husband, two little boys & I watched this report and were very saddened to see the way in which these wonderful creatures were rounded up for sale / slaughter all in the name of the mighty dollar. We thought the Japanese fellow had a valid point about the Aussies choosing to slaughter one of their national icons, kangaroos, for the production of meat. How is this any different to the treatment of dolphins? Or pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, dogs, cats or fish for that matter? Who gets to choose the hierarchy of the animals we deem to be acceptable to put on our plates? And as for the Sea World style parks making dolphin meat available to punters to enjoy while watching the show - is this really any different to the way people trot along to the zoo to look at the lovely animals with their kids while chomping on a hotdog/fishburger/sausage etc from the zoo cafe? If you felt as sad about what is happening in the world as we did the best place to start is with yourself and your family. Years ago we decided to live a less violent existence by choosing to save lives every day simply through what we eat (or don't eat). Food for thought!

it is cruel how the hunters kill dolphins and we should protect them as with every other species lest we find ourselves only with bugs and maybe domesticated left for company. But keep in mind that it is easy in the west to demonize asians for what they do because they are usually the ones who are lucky enough to live exessively indulgent lifestyles, the folks in Taiji do not appreciate the rude way that the white journalists try to get answers and a story and the fact that they're a small community means that they don't have as many resources. it is a very complex issue which will require petulance and understanding from both sides to come to a resolution. maybe I'm too optimistic, after all too many people choose to be ignorant and stick to their comfortably narrow world-views.

If we all feel this passionate about the cruelty of animals in the world we all need to start individually doing something about it. Donate what you can to those organisations out there physically trying to make a difference, every little bit helps. Don't buy any products from the countries that are involved in such disrespect and cruelty to their animals as this just supports that country. It also happens right here in NZ, buy only free range pork, chicken, eggs!! It's up to us as consumers to stop this, because at the end of the day, we pay the dollar which makes them the dollar!!

I wanted to almost cry when I saw this topic on 60 minutes, it made me so angry to see how preposturous the asians are when it come to animals, they have no respect! It is true what Rose said, I saw a documentary on Discovery ages ago about it being illegal to kill tigers for medicine but people are still doing it in hideouts etc in asia...
I am a huge animal lover and have been privelaged to spend time in the water with dolphins - witnessed their beautiful and playful personalities, it hardly seems fair that they are unneccessarily killed for money-hungry people. If anything sould be labelled cockroaches, its the asians that butcher such amazing wildlife.

Are there any groups on facebook etc for this topic?

enslaving dolphins in Sea World for their whole life is just as worse in my mind. i know i would much rather be six feet under than to be in a concrete enclosure, depressed and made to perform tirelessly for my whole life. sure dolphins are spectacular creatures, so are kangaroos and australians slaughter them- no worries mate. hypocritical much?
