A large slip has closed State Highway 1 on the East Coast of the South Island.
It covers both lanes of the road 20km south of Ward, south of Blenheim.
Due to the location, the only detour for motorists is via the Lewis Pass through to Murchison and the Wairau valley.
The NZ Transport Agency says the slip is still on the move and the road is not likely to open again until the morning.
