Team New Zealand have made a slow start in the opening sailing regatta of the new America's Cup World Series season.

Skipper Dean Barker and his crew finished eighth and ninth in the two fleet races on the first day of competition at San Francisco.

"Today we were far from our best," Barker admits.

He said Team NZ were well aware that they had to be quick off the start line and be in good shape at the first mark, as it was difficult to create passing opportunities on the course.

American syndicate Oracle's two boats shared the spoils by each winning a race.
