Small businesses should pursue China themselves - Expert

China is the world's second largest economy and its current growth rate could see it soon replace the United States at the top of that list.

But four years into our free trade agreement with China are we making the most of our economic relationship?

“Free trade agreements tend to be top down, what you really need is a bottom-up approach,” international relations expert Dr John Lee told Firstline this morning.

Dr Lee is encouraging businesses which want to push into China to create their own relationships.

“There’s not a lot the New Zealand Government can do for small businesses […] I think really businesses need to go to various provinces where they see opportunities.”
