Smoking in cars ban may not work: Turia
Thu, 31 May 2012 4:21p.m.
Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia has admitted it may be too hard to ban smoking in cars.
Ms Turia has asked the Ministry of Health to look at the options around banning smoking in cars, but she says it might be too difficult to police.
She's suggesting self-policing could be an alternative.
"One of the ways we could do that is to encourage people who see people smoking in cars tooting to them," Ms Turia said.
Ms Turia is a strong supporter of action on smoking and the Maori Party co-leader wants to ban smoking in cars to help it get to its goal of New Zealand being smoke-free by 2025.
The Government announced a hike in tobacco tax of 10 percent each year for the next four years in last week's Budget, taking the price of a pack of cigarettes to around $20 by 2016.

We all have rights,if I choose to smoke then I should be able to do so in my home and in my car, not all smokers are ignorant. In fact most have been very tolerant of the anti-smoking campaign which is beginning to amount to harassment.
I would like to see more action taken on a lot of other issues happening in this country that is far more detrimental to society and the people that call New Zealand home.

Give me a break. Getting in a car with a smoker or after a smoker is yuk. If you think smoking in your car is ok...I'll get out. If you think it's ok for your kids then just blow in their face - can they get out? seriously who's human rights are being breached here?

This fascist pig, Turia, has no place in government. She seems committed to removing as many human rights as she can with this right-wing "tax the poor into behaving" mentality. The people she is harming most with her totalitarian approach are the very people she claims to help. How many kids will go hungry because of Turia's draconian taxation. She's like the Sheriff of Nottingham, looting and pillaging her constituents!!!

I thought tooting another vehicle was called a distraction, who are these ridiculois people that come up with these ideas, oh let's police them, really, they can't even stop people using their cell phones, but wait let's police them ha ha what a joke, using cellphones is even more dangerous, and don't get me started on the drink driving, yes I am a smoker but I don't smoke in the car, the government obviously have more money than sense to come up with ridiculois crap like this

A vehicle horn is a warning device and using it in non emergency is a criminal offence .I can not believe a politician would recomend every one should break the law.

Follow Australias lead where you can not smoke in a car with a child in it. I don't think it is fair to stop someone smoking in their own car, if they want to kill themselves fine, but protect the children as they don't have a say.

You "toot" at them? This has got to take being a busybody to new heights. This is pathetic. Another brick wall waiting to hit this campaign will happen when people in the tourist industry finally wake up to what a smoke free (or $100 a pack) situation does to tourist/business visitor numbers. If you are a smoker you don’t just turn off for a couple of weeks while you take your holidays in NZ...and no, I am not a smoker but sometimes reality intrudes on everyones life. If believe many people are getting to that tipping point of "go away and leave us alone" response.

What a sill idea tooting. A vehicle horn is a warning device . How many times do we see people suddenly slam on their brakes because someone toots a horn at a passeing vehicle or the like. Dangerous suggestion.

Dont worry about smoking in cars. But make a law to stop smoking cars on the roads, all so diesel 4 wheel drives and buses that will do more harm too your health. As the other day I got behind a 4 wheel drive at the lights, and when it took off there was a blank screen of smoke.
