Experienced public service boss David Smol has been appointed to head the government's new "super ministry", the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Mr Smol has been acting chief executive at the new ministry since April, before which he was chief executive of the former Ministry of Economic Development (MED).

MED was one of four agencies folded into MBIE when it came into effect on July 1, alongside the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Department of Labour and Department of Building and Housing.

Mr Smol will be tasked with integrating the four former agencies into an efficient and effective single ministry, State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie said.

His contract runs until June 2017.
