Halfback Chris Smylie and rookie prop Reg Goodes have been ruled out of the Hurricanes' Super rugby season-opening trip to South Africa and Australia.

A 25-strong Hurricanes squad will depart Wellington on Saturday without the pair, who picked up injuries in the 23-19 pre-season win over the Chiefs in Taupo on Friday.

It means 19-year-old Goodes, who hails originally from Witbank, near Pretoria, misses out on a return to his country of birth.

The Hurricanes begin their campaign with three matches on the road - against the Stormers, the Lions and the Western Force.

Hurricanes squad travelling to South Africa:

Backs - Chris Eaton, TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett, Daniel Kirkpatrick, Tim Bateman, Charlie Ngatai, Conrad Smith (capt), Alapati Leiua, Julian Savea, Andre Taylor, Cory Jane;

Forwards - Dane Coles, Motu Matu'u, Ben May, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Michael Bent, Tristan Moran, Jason Eaton, James Broadhurst, Jeremy Thrush, Victor Vito, Jack Lam, Faifili Levave, Brad Shields, Scott Fuglistaller.
