Rapper Snoop Dogg has signed up to play blues singer Fillmore Slim on the big screen.

The Legend of Fillmore Slim will tell the story of the musician's rise to fame as a vocalist and guitarist in the 1950s, as well as his fall from grace after becoming a pimp in San Francisco, California.

Fillmore also served time behind bars after he was caught attempting to purchase a forged passport so he could play a gig in France.

The biopic is scheduled to begin shooting in March and movie bosses are confident hip-hop star Snoop is perfect for the lead role.

Co-producer Alan Ames tells Deadline.com, "This film will span decades, from Slim's emergence as a musician, to his fascination with the fast life, through his years of incarceration and his redemption."
