The polar blast that was expected to hit the lower South Island overnight has not arrived in full force yet, but Metservice says it is still on its way.

Road warnings are in place and snow is forecast to fall down to low levels today.  Up to 12 centimetres of snow is forecast to fall on the desert road through to midnight tonight, and snow is also expected in the lower North Island.

Further snow showers are possible tomorrow.
