The number of Auckland families in urgent and serious need of secure housing has increased significantly since March 2012, the Greens say.
Co-leader Metiria Turei is citing the latest Ministry of Social Development figures, which she says are shameful.
The ministry took over Housing New Zealand's assessment responsibility for social housing in April.
Ms Turei says that in March 2012 the number of Auckland households in urgent need of a secure home was 160 and now it is 1707.
The number with serious need was 921 and has increased to 1632.
"These figures are a shame on the Government," Ms Turei said.
"They are a result of Government policies that have left one in four of our children in poverty and where the well-off have been looked after but not those most in need."
