Mall phobia is a condition that seems to be spreading through Christchurch.

Many shoppers are too afraid to go to one of the cities' major malls because of stories spread through social media and by text that it's not safe and shouldn't be open.

So after being asked by viewers, Campbell Live decided to investigate if Riccarton Mall is safe.

Watch Helen Vaughan's report.

In regards to the comment by Monika- I work in Riccarton Mall, and I feel more safe in the mall than I do most places. You can't understand how buildings like these can handle receiving no damage? Are you serious? are you aware that architecture can actually allow buildings to withstand earthquakes by the way they are designed and structured? perhaps take a glimpse at Japan. Honestly, do some research. Well done for noting that the engineer that spoke on the show is contracted to Westfield, they are a large cooperation, what do you expect? perhaps you should take business studies101. Do you honestly think that a cooperation would prefer to take a risk, such as opening the mall if it was not safe? And that Westfield would be willing to take the risk of being responsible for any injuries whilst potentially letting the entire cooperation go under because of this? Are you actually that naive? Please tell me your comment was a joke?

Hi there First of all thanks for investigating this story. I must say that I still don't trust what everybody has said about the mall. I am sure that the people of the CTV building and PGC where told something along the same lines and look what has happenend. I don't understand how buildings like that can withstand earthquake after earthquake and not receive some major damage.I have also heard the story's , and I for one will not go in that mall thats for sure. One thing I would like to point out is that the engineer in the story is contracted to Westfield so of course he has to say its in good shape. I wonder what some of the employees of the shops would say if you asked them about how they feel to be there. regards MO
