The three bodies return to Christchurch today

The bodies of three New Zealand soldiers killed by a bomb in Afghanistan will return home today.

Corporal Luke Tamatea, 31, Lance Corporal Jacinda Baker, 26, and Private Richard Harris, 21, died instantly when a bomb exploded under a Humvee they were in.

They were in the last vehicle of a convoy of four Humvees taking an ill patrol member to the doctor when they hit the bomb.

Their bodies are being flown home after being farewelled by their comrades at a "ramp ceremony" at Bagram Air Base on Tuesday.

Members of their Provincial Reconstruction Team attended, as well as US chairman of the joint chiefs of staff General Martin E Dempsey and commander of the International Security Assistance Force General John R Allen.

An Australian Defence Force A-340 is flying the soldiers to Australia, from where a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 Hercules will take them to New Zealand.
