Solid Energy says reports of methane levels being higher than what they should be are false

Solid Energy has fronted up to answer allegations that its Huntly East Mine is unsafe.

Around 200 people turned up to a meeting to discuss the evacuation of miners when high levels of methane gas were detected.

Solid Energy has confirmed two staff members remain suspended following two separate incidents at the Huntly East Mine last month which involved the same error.

However, the company rejects allegations it has been reckless on safety issues in pursuit of profits.

It maintains it has plenty of capable staff working in the mine despite a large number leaving for better wages in Australia.

Solid Energy chief executive Don Elder also says that media reports stating that methane gas levels were above the recommended safety levels were simply untrue.

Yeah right. They would say that. Any chance that Solid Energy will let independent assessors in at times the assessors choose, not when Solid Energy has just reduced the problem temporarily?
