Sonny Bill Williams has confirmed his next heavyweight fight is in doubt due to injury.
But while that bout might be off, Williams could have another scrap on his hands as his return to the NRL with the Roosters is anything but certain.
He might not be facing Francois Botha, but Williams was still ducking punches about his NRL future on landing in Sydney. He expects to know within three days whether his pectoral injury will curtail his build up to the November 24 fight.
“Hopefully if I do have to have some time off, I just miss the fight and I can continue the season with the Panasonic Wild Knights.”
But will Williams' $100,000 per game deal with the Japanese club be his union swansong? With his agent Koder Nasser unwilling to become accredited with the NRL, any deal could yet be blocked.
Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant says protocol will be followed.
“We're waiting to see [if we] get an approach from the Roosters, and it has to be according to the process we've got in place, like it's been forever.”
So they want him, but on their terms, meaning the fight and the return to league are both uncertain.
For now Williams’ only focus is sorting his injury and meeting nephew Malik.
“[I want to] see my nephew who I haven't met before, and then after that I’m going to get some scans done.”
