Newly-crowned New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Bill Williams may miss the Chiefs opening Super Rugby match against the Highlanders after sustaining a minor hamstring tear.

Williams got the injury during a fitness session in Sydney prior to his bout against Clarence Tillman last week.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says Williams hasn’t participated in training this week, but is expected to be back soon.

"He's been fine," Rennie says.
"We've been conscious of the fact that he's been smashing himself at night in the boxing gym so we've taken him out of some of our conditioning stuff. He has been doing our skill-based work and he's got a pretty good idea of what we want to do."

The Chiefs had a hard-fought 38-36 win over the Highlanders in their pre-season clash over the weekend.

He got the hammy during sprint training in sydney. The training was for his rugby- not his boxing. It's at least good to know he is hurting for the cause. Get well son.

Sonny Bill needs to decide what he wants to be. A number of people would have bought tickets to this game under the impression that he would be playing. Now he's let them down.
