Grunge rock giants Soundgarden are back together.

Singer Chris Cornell, recently of Audioslave and a hit-and-miss solo career, made the announcement on his official website yesterday.

"The 12-year break is over and school is back in session. Sign up now. Knights of the Soundtable ride again!" he wrote, directing fans to website www.soundgardenworld.com.

In 2009 the band denied a reformation was planned for 2010, only confirming they were readying a box set of of B-sides and other hard-to-find recordings.

Soundgarden broke up at the height of their powers in 1997. Cornell formed Audioslave with ex-members of Rage Against the Machine, releasing three albums before splitting so Rage themselves could get back together. His solo career has met with mixed reviews, particularly his last album Scream, which was recorded with hip-hop producer Timbaland.

Drummer Matt Cameron currently plays with Pearl Jam.

No tour or album of new material has yet been announced.
