South Island Field Days: 'Recession? What recession?'

It is one of the biggest events on the farming calendar, so a little word like 'recession' was never going to stop the South Island agricultural Field Days going off.

There is a general sense New Zealand is well-placed to beat the economic blues.

Te Kuiti farmer Robin Fagan reckons he has got the answer to one of the most thankless tasks on a farm - manhandling the sheep.

A PDA-compatible, voice-activated piece of farmyard wizardry improves every part of the stock handling process.

"I've got honestly a queue lined up," says Mr Fagan. "They can't wait."

Racewell is one of almost 330 exhibitors who have flocked to Lincoln for the South Island Field Days.

Up to 25,000 people will attend, all hungry for new ways to blow some cash.

Despite global economic concerns, the fact is people still have to eat. This year's dairy payout is still healthy, sheep meat prices have almost doubled since this time last year. The mood here, if anything, is optimistic.

Around here, recession is a dirty word.

"I haven't got any time to listen to that nonsense. It's just full-bore, full steam ahead."

"Dairy farmers invest for the long haul. They don't say because things are looking a bit down at the moment we won't invest," says John Perrin, Herdflow.

And with farmers constantly looking for new technology at cheaper prices, there is a strong belief that New Zealand will be perfectly placed to take advantage of a global upturn.

"I guess we're seen as the international leaders of the dairy industry," says Mr Perrin.

Farmers here have been through tough times before, and they are prepared for whatever may be coming.

"Farming is a very safe industry, and it's going to be that way for the rest of the foreseeable future," says Vern Coxhead, Corkhill Systems Ltd.

Especially when you have just dropped a couple of hundred grand on a new tractor.
