A South Korean government agency is launching a team to examine Facebook and Twitter posts and smartphone applications for illicit content.
The Korea Communications Standards Commission said Wednesday that the team is needed to deal with a growing volume of such content online.
The team will in part target violations of a law that makes it a crime to praise, sympathise or cooperate with North Korea.
Indictments under the National Security Law have shot up as South Korea's conservative government uses it to clamp down on citizens it views with suspicion.
Officials are also blocking access to North Korean websites, deleting thousands of web postings and going after social media messages seen as celebrating the North.
