A southern right whale visits Wellington Harbour

Wellington Harbour had a large visitor this morning - a southern right whale.

It attracted plenty of interest as it swam lazily just off Scorching Bay.

Initially some people thought it was a sperm or a humpback whale, but a DOC spokesman who watched our 3 News pictures identified it positively as a southern right.

He said it was unusual for a southern right to visit Wellington Harbour so late in this northwards migration season.
