A 10-year-old Southland boy is the hero of his school for trekking 21 kilometres to safety after getting lost on a hunting trip.

3 News caught up with Bailey James Read in Winton and was told how he became separated from two adults just north of Lumsden.

The schoolboy then walked through the hills alone, all the way to Balfour.
