A Trans-Tasman tournament is giving New Zealand's Special Olympics athletes reason to celebrate.

Usually only 50 of the 6000 Kiwis who compete at the Special Olympics can head to the championships, last held in Athens in June.

But a Trans-Tasman tournament is allowing for more than 200 athletes to compete in football and basketball.

Football in particular is flourishing, in large thanks to an initiative called Just Play, a training scheme run in conjunction with Oceania Football.

But it's not just about developing sporting skills, it’s also involves meeting people and building team skills.

And there'll be another chance next year when Australia looks set to host.
