Broadway's much-maligned Spider-Man musical closed out 2012 in style by setting new box office records for New York theatre.

The spectacular, which opened to scathing reviews last year following multiple delays and safety issues, grabbed the record for the highest single-week gross of any show in Broadway history on Tuesday thanks to post-Christmas ticket sales of over US$2.9 million.

The previous record holder, Wicked, took in US$2.2 million a year ago and ironically the Wizard of Oz spin-off had another huge end to the year, raking in over US$2.7 million from nine shows last week.
