Sprinters earn World Cup call-up

Strong displays at the national track cycling championships have earned six sprinters a trip to London later this month to contest a World Cup round.

The 15-strong squad includes female sprinters Natasha Hansen and Katie Schofield who shared three national records and four New Zealand records between them in Invercargill.

Schofield set a new record of 19.594sec in qualifying for the women's standing lap on her way to the title on Monday, while Hansen rounded off a superb championships with her third title - winning the keirin.

BikeNZ high performance director Mark Elliott says the improvements the pair have made has put them in contention for the world championships and the Olympics.

"They have demanded selection on form and they are on track if they continue to improve to qualify for the world championships.

"The bigger picture of the Olympics is a bit further down the road," he said.

Other sprinters to earn selection are Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Simon van Velthooven.

Mitchell won the standing lap in a national record of 17.610sec on the final day, while Van Velthooven claimed the keirin crown.

The squad for the February 16-19 event also includes includes the men's and women's team pursuit along with omnium riders Joanne Kiesanowski and Shane Archbold.

The world championships take place in Melbourne in April and Elliott says they will use the London event, which will play host to the Olympics, as a building block for dates later in the year.
