Ambulance provider St John says its latest appeal has raised a record amount - $1,150,000.

It's an improvement on last year's total, an effort St John's Gerry Fitzgerald is "outstanding, especially given the current economic climate and the demand on public generosity in response to the Christchurch earthquakes".

"In our appeal we emphasised that, unlike police and fire, we are a charity and our ambulance service this year will have a cash shortfall of $14 million that will need to be funded via donations and commercial activities,” says Mr Fitzgerald.

“This result speaks volumes for the value New Zealanders place on our services in the community."

Donations can be made at any time of the year at any ASB branch or http://www.stjohn.org.nz.
