St John Ambulance has launched an internal investigation into concerns its callout procedures may have led to the deaths of three people.
During the height of the swine flu outbreak in July, ambulance services were stretched and in a bid to cut work loads, flu callouts were downgraded in priority.
It is understood one patient - who complained of flu symptoms – did not get an ambulance to their home for an hour and by that time they were in cardiac arrest and died.
The swine flu procedure was stopped so after, but two other patients' deaths and three other cases are also being investigated.
