It's Star Trek people, but not as we know it.

This is Star Trek 11, on a mission to make Star Trek cool again.

And does it? Oh yes it does.

Relative newcomer Chris Pine is our new Captain Kirk, Heroes star Zachary Quinto is Mr Spock.

We even have a kiwi on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, Karl Urban brings Bones back to life.

And it's not just all about the newbies.  After a 19 year hiatus, welcome back Leonard Nimoy.

This film is kind of a prequel.  We meet James Tiberious Kirk at the moment of his birth, and meet Spock getting bullied at Vulcan primary school.

We're around when they first meet each other, and for their first punch-up.  We're there for the maiden voyage, of the Starship Enterprise.

So let me say right now, I have never been a trekkie, it was Star Wars all the way for me. So I approached this new Star Trek with some trepidation.

The first clever move by the filmmakers was to bring on Lost director JJ Abrams. His reboot is sheer entertainment pure and simple.

A cracking script, classy special effects, excellent performances and cast chemistry, and still loyal to the sci-fi Trek brand.

Live long and prosper, 4 and half stars.
