American comedian Stephen Colbert has mocked Kiwis in a recent TV segment, calling New Zealand the ‘Canada of Australia’.

Colbert hosts Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, a fake news show that lampoons popular culture and political figures. 

In his ‘Who’s Honoring Me Now’ segment Colbert jokingly examines a scientific report from the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review on his concept of ‘truthiness’.

“Long overdue recognition of my influence comes from a joint team of psychology researchers out of Canada and New Zealand,” says Colbert.

“Makes sense – after all, what is New Zealand but the Canada of Australia.”

He also joked that New Zealand’s timezone was seven years behind the US.

Stop being so up tight NZ media. Any time someone insults NZ, it is not news worthy. I've been saying NZ is the little brother of Australia like Canada is the little brother of USA for ages. Get a sense of humour.
