Paramatta Eels coach Stephen Kearney has officially stepped down.

Midway through his second season with the club, Kearney today called a press conference in Australia where he announced his decision.

Appointed to replace the sacked Daniel Anderson ahead of the 2011 season, Kearney has failed to get results.

Parramatta avoided the wooden spoon only in the last round of 2011 and sit in last place this season heading into the final seven weeks. Kearney had won only 9 of his 41 games with the Eels in the NRL.

The 40-year said that he was “grateful for the experience the board has given me”.

"It's one I've learnt a great deal from,” Kearney says.

"I wish the Eels all the best for the future. "From my point of view we cold go through a thousand reasons why and why not and I'm not here to give you those reasons today I'm here to say that I think it's time for a change and for the club to move on."

Earlier today it was reported that Kearney had been sacked from the position and it’s understood that Kearney walked before pushed.

The decision to axe Kearney was reportedly made late on Thursday but it is still unsure when the his last game at the helm will be.

Captain Nathan Hindmarsh admitted that some of the responsibility had to fall on players.

"It's not ideal but my job as a rugby league player is to play rugby league and go out there and if that means winning so be it but if that means losing that's something you've got to deal with as well," Hindmarsh was reported as saying.

"It's been a disruptive year but we've got to go out there and do our best on the field on the weekend.

"The playing group supports Steve's decision. Despite what everyone thinks about his results the amount of work Steve puts in behind the scenes (is huge) and he's got this club back to where it needs to go in regards to junior development and grass roots football. I wish him all the best."
