Steve Williams has apologised for describing his former boss, Tiger Woods, as a “black a**ehole”.

Williams was speaking at an awards dinner and had won an award for the year’s best celebration after he said his victory with current employer Adam Scott at the Bridgestone Invitational in August was “the best win of my career”.

The 47-year-old said he intended to “shove it up that black a**ehole” when asked to explain his comment.

On his website, kiwicaddy.co.nz, Williams just issued the following statement:

"I apologize for comments I made last night at the Annual Caddy Awards dinner in Shanghai. Players and caddies look forward to this evening all year and the spirit is always joking and fun. I now realize how my comments could be construed as racist. However I assure you that was not my intent. I sincerely apologize to Tiger and anyone else I have offended."

According to the Daily Mail one caddie said at the time:

“Never have you been in a room and seen so many jaws drop at the same time. We knew he was an idiot but we didn't know he was a racist idiot. I was standing next to a European Tour official who said, ‘Thank God he is not on our tour’.'

Williams could face a ban for the comment, but will claim the function was private and that journalists were told it was strictly off the record,

Another caddie told the Daily Mail:

"I don't know all the ins and outs of why they split up but how can anyone be so bitter to someone who earned them £10million?”

To be fair to Steve Tiger is black & I think it's safe to say he is considered to be an a**ehole by many people after his indiscretions last year. I am black too & I'm proud of it so I don't understand why adding a general insult to the fact that he's black makes it a racist statement. Steve may not be the nicest of guys at times but I don't think it's fair to throw the racist card at him.
