A possum has been found alive floating on a log off the coast of Kapiti Island by a group of people fishing.

Alan Wood, Mike Mabey and Joshua Morgan saw the marsupial floating on the wishbone-shaped log on Wednesday and filmed it on their phone.

The trio alerted the Department of Conservation (DOC) which immediately searched Kapiti Island because it is a pest-free sanctuary and has been possum-free since the 1980s.

DOC spokesperson Colin Giddy says the it is unlikely the animal washed up on the island because staff haven’t seen the log or any signs of possum scratching.

Mr Giddy says a stoat found on the island in 2010 may have arrived in a similar way.

A Stout was found in 2010? That's serious! Introduced dark beer could decimate the local Pale Ale population.
