Strong aftershock hits Christchurch

By Dan Satherley and James Murray

There are reports of another strong aftershock in Christchurch this evening.

GNS Science reports the shake at magnitude 5.3, located 10km west of Akaroa, and hit at 10:34pm.

It was at a depth of 12km.

A further magnitude 3.4 quake, about 10km southwest of Christchurch, struck at 10.57pm.

Christchurch Airport has announced it has closed for inspections.

"Feels completely different to any other earthquakes I have felt since September!" wrote Twitter user @swiggs.

"The rumbles of this #eqnz haven't stopped for the last 20 minutes!" wrote @rebuildchch.

Reporting on the 3 News iPhone app Shelley said: "We r in russley & that EQ shock the house around. It was so frightening & we have no power The ground is still shaking."

Julianne Shields sent - "Julianne Shields Comment : Power out in Ilam in Chch. Quake felt smaller than the 13th, but enough to shake things up again!".

No damage has been reported by police so far but the quake was felt as far away as Dunedin.

Orion Energy said power went out in Ilam, Avonhead, Bryndwyr and Russley. Parts of Burnside and Fendalton have also lost power.

However, it is now being reported power has now been restored to everywhere other than Hornby.

This is breaking news – more to follow.
