There are reports of another strong aftershock in Christchurch this evening.

GNS Science reports the shake at magnitude 5.3, located 10km west of Akaroa, and hit at 10:34pm.

It was at a depth of 12km.

A further magnitude 3.4 quake, about 10km southwest of Christchurch, struck at 10.57pm.

Christchurch Airport has announced it has closed for inspections.

"Feels completely different to any other earthquakes I have felt since September!" wrote Twitter user @swiggs.

"The rumbles of this #eqnz haven't stopped for the last 20 minutes!" wrote @rebuildchch.

Reporting on the 3 News iPhone app Shelley said: "We r in russley & that EQ shock the house around. It was so frightening & we have no power The ground is still shaking."

Julianne Shields sent - "Julianne Shields Comment : Power out in Ilam in Chch. Quake felt smaller than the 13th, but enough to shake things up again!".

No damage has been reported by police so far but the quake was felt as far away as Dunedin.

Orion Energy said power went out in Ilam, Avonhead, Bryndwyr and Russley. Parts of Burnside and Fendalton have also lost power.

However, it is now being reported power has now been restored to everywhere other than Hornby.

We should vacate Christchurch completely until we are completely sure that the land has stabilized. There's no point in staying if nerves will continue to be frayed and buildings keep getting knocked down after they've been rebuilt. And the damage bill can only go up as well.

Btw the US Geological Survey says that the epicentre was actually on Hoon Hay Valley Road, 7km from Christchurch. Makes more sense if you ask me, but I still think that that was bigger than a 5.3.

we in rolleston and it was like sept all over again ok it was a 5.3 but it felt like a 6 at least, when you bed starts to almost jump around and your house moves uncontrolably thats big....... how many more and are they heading out here again ...where they started lets hope for ALL of chc they stop !!!!!!!!
