Severe gales are expected in places, with winds likely to strengthen significantly around the Catlins and coastal Otago. Banks Peninsula in Canterbury may also see strong winds.
More snow is forecast across the lower South Island and the Southern Alps, and is likely to fall on the Desert Road in the North Island.
