A group of student led volunteers in Christchurch are looking forward to helping with the earthquake relief effort in any way they can and inviting everyone to participate.

The UC Student Volunteer Army was set up after the September earthquake struck Canterbury but has updated their Facebook page after yesterday’s devastating quake.

They state on the page: “Please be patient and keep checking back to this page for information over the next 24 hours. As soon as we know what we can do we will let you all know. Until then, keep out of the CBD.”

“Last September hundreds of students helped in the relief effort for over two weeks,” says UC Student Volunteer Army organiser Louis Brown.

“This time we’ll do whatever we can, with more people for probably a longer period of time. We’re organising thousands of volunteers and working directly with Civil Defence in order to deploy ourselves with accuracy according their advice.”

To make a donation to the UC Student Volunteer Army which will help with supplying food, water and transport to volunteers, you can deposit directly into the bank account of Te Wai Pounamu Foundation, 03-1354-0238686-00.

Brown advises potential volunteers to keep checking the Facebook page for instructions.

Hi,
I was wondering if there are any voulnteer groups from the North Island, possibly around the Waikato/Bay of Plenty area because thats where I'm at, who'll be going down to Christchurch to help, because I'd be available for awhile and would be very help with anything with the effort down there at the moment.
If someone would have any infomation on any voulnteer groups from my area or would be able to direct me somewhere that'll be fantastic.
You can reach me through my email at- moomct@hotmail.com or (PH)07 863 6870.

Thanks,

Fantastic support from Student Army Volunteers. Please if your able, unemployed and have vehicles join up with Student Vounteers and support Christchurch elderly, disability locals and those without vehicle, ACC, IHC and CCS people needing assistance. I am so proud of grass root volunteers, bless you all and Kia Kaha to all supporting you!

Kia Kaha all in Christchurch. I live in Timberlea, Upper Hutt City. We are prepared to house people at our home that need to be relocated. Our phone contact is 027-245-4072. If people can get to Wgtn, we will follow on from there. Keep us informed or ask your teams to respond to this extension of manaakitanga. Ka Wha Whai Tonu Matou mo ake tonu. Kia Tau Te Rangimarie.
