Otago University's student president is being accused of a media beatup after alleging an ACT Party member assaulted him last night.

Logan Edgars was preparing for two nights inside a steel cage, to protest an ACT Party bill on student union membership when he says he was approached by ACT on Campus members.

He says he destroyed one of their pro-ACT signs before allegedly being grabbed by the throat.

ACT on Campus President Peter McCaffrey says both men involved were "stupid" but says Mr Edgars is blowing the incident out of proportion.

Mr McCaffrey says he is not excusing what happened but for Mr Edgars to try and portray it as an attack by an angry ACT member is 'ridiculous'.
