When the words, Oscar Red Carpet are said, one of the first images that come to mind is fashion and jewellery.

Jewellery trends often vary on the red carpet ranging from classic white diamonds, to colourful gemstones or various forms of luxurious costume jewellery.

"I think this year at the Oscars, as we normally see, it's going to be lots of classic, old Hollywood glamour," predicts Francesca Ferrante from the Diamond Information Centre. "Whether its big statement earrings or a couple of bracelets layered together, the diamonds are going to be substantial but still that simplistic beauty that we always see. Each year at the Oscars there is normally four hundred million dollars worth of diamond jewellery. That's a lot of carats per star."

Last year colourful jewellery made a statement when Angelina Jolie wore a long black strapless Elie Saab gown with long green earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. This year, colour is back. You'll definitely see them on the red carpet in all forms - dangling earrings, big bold rings, and button earrings.

"One of the biggest trends we are going to see on the red carpet is colour. We have already seen quit a bit. We had Diane Kruger wearing Harry Winston at the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards," said Lindsay Meyer from Building Communications. "Colour really makes a piece pop. It can really add to any outfit. Celebrities have always been a fan of platinum. Platinum really brings out the colour. We will see a lot of blues a lot of greens. There are some great options available from KWIAT. They feature some amazing vintage designs with sapphire and ruby."

Although diamonds are a fail-proof solution to any jewellery and accessory concern, many don't wish to bother with the responsibility that comes with carrying millions of dollars worth of precious gems on their bodies. The alternative is to wear a luxurious piece of costume jewellery.

"That's right we are going to be seeing a lot of celebrities wearing costume jewellery instead of real diamonds, because they can. Because they don't want to be wearing a millions dollars worth of diamonds and worry that something happens when they can just wear costume jewellery and be comfortable that nothing is going to happen to the jewellery and that they look great in it," explained Leah-Vail Soloff from Fingerprint Communications.

Earlier this year, the up and coming fashionista, Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan opted to wear a large piece of costume jewellery by Marni to the Cristic's Choice Awards.

The countdown begins with less than one week until we know for sure, what the most popular trends will be in terms of jewellery.
