Divers have carried out preliminary sub-surface inspections around the wreck of the Rena.
It's to prepare them for a full underwater survey of the sunken rear section once the sea swells ease over the next couple of days.
Maritime New Zealand says once that's complete, the salvors can plan their next steps to recover underwater containers.
Meanwhile, Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Teams will be deployed to Motiti Island today, assisted by an environmental advisor.
