Summer Fun

3News NZ

Summer is finally here. It is the season of fun and lots of walks and lazing on the beach. We love taking our dogs to the beach to let them have fun with us and I see many a dog having a great time playing in the sand and sea.

With the days becoming hot, so does the sand, I have such a laugh when I watch my friends running as fast as they can to the sea when the sand is too hot for their feet. You must remember however that if the sand is too hot for our twinkle toes it is certainly hot on our dogs’ paws. Try to walk your dog very early morning and late evening when it is cooler for them to play.

Remember to abide by the beach rules, if it is “on leash” in certain areas then please do not let your dog off their leash to run around and most importantly pick up your dog's mess. I see far too many people putting some sand over it to hide it and they think this is acceptable, we have to think about other members of the public walking bare foot or wearing their fabulous summer jandals and also the many children that will be playing in the sand.

The garden is a place where our dogs usually hang out, it is important to make sure they have a couple of places they can move to so they can stay in the shade and be comfortable and cool.

Offer them more than one water bowl to drink from as the sun moves and can make the water boil. There is nothing more refreshing on a hot day than a good cold bottle of water to quench your thirst and your dog certainly wants the same feeling.

So this summer try and be mindful of your dog and the conditions they are in and slip slop slap
