You have all heard the phrase ‘Get out in the sun for your dose of vitamin D’ but you need to put your ‘sensible hat’ on and make sure you are protected from the damaging UVB and UVA rays that not only damage your skin and make it wrinkly but can cause skin cancers to develop, which can kill you.

New Zealand alone had 249 deaths from melanomas in 2004. 152 men and 97 women and the costs to the NZ health system is $33 million a year.

Excessive exposure to UVR before you are 20 increases the risk later on in life. There is no one out there immune from the damage, EVERYONE needs to protect themselves with a good sunscreen, not only in summer but also winter. Hopefully information like this is enough to make you realise how important protecting yourself is and it isn’t hard to do. It’s as simple as applying a sunscreen every day. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

Invisible Zinc
Elle McPherson is the spokesperson for Invisible Zinc and wishes she had it available to use when she was younger. It contains patented natural zinc which sits on the skin and reflects UVA/UVB rays. This is a powerful sunscreen and has several different products in the range for children and adults, for both face and body including a 4hr water resistant sunscreen.
Available from leading health stores and pharmacies.

Olay Complete Defense SPF 30 +
With this moisturizing lotion on the market there is no excuse to not wear a SPF lotion daily. Only $12.99! Available in normal and sensitive skin. It is lightweight and non greasy so works well under make up. Throw a few in your supermarket trolley for kid’s school bags, and the car.
Available at leading supermarkets, pharmacies and department stores.

Prevage SPF 30
Available in a stunning pump bottle you will feel like royalty just applying this in the mornings and you might also need a royal bank account to afford it.

At $240 for 50 ml this high level SPF moisturizer with revolutionary ‘Idebenone’, contains the most powerful antioxidant on the market, so this is what you will be paying for. A lovely lightweight treatment which will help diminish the signs of ageing whilst protecting your skin and giving it look of radiance. A whole range of Prevage skincare is available in case you have the winning Lotto ticket. This is the ‘cream de la cream’ of sunscreens.
Available from Elizabeth Arden counters from 16 November.

Avalon Organics Moisture Plus Lotion
200ml $29.95
With SPF 18 and a delicious lavender fragrance. Good for sensitive skin as it also has Licorice root which helps soothe redness and sensitivities and contains sunflower oil for hydrating.
Available at leading health stores, pharmacies

Don’t be a stinge when applying sunscreens; apply liberally and often as required.

Check use by dates especially on natural, organic products and toss out any sunscreens if over a year old as the product may have oxidized and won’t be as effective.

Better to be safe than sorry, start today and make it part of your morning ritual. Teach your children to apply their own sunscreen after brushing their teeth in the mornings and let them know there is one in their school bags for touch ups at lunch time or before swimming sports. Place sunscreens everywhere then you will be more inclined to use them regularly.
