Wow Alex, you just sounds like one of those ignorant, uninformed, naysayers who immediately assumes the worst. Colin's package is the best shot leaky home owners have at a resolution to this disaster - sure it could do with some tweaks, but if it worked in Canada there is no reason why it can't work here. He may not be a politician but he is financially savvy - which is what Auckland needs right now.

This idea sounds familiar? Actually it was the Canadian solution. So its proven. Its advantage is an immediate solution "for everyone" (not just those that qualify), that uses the govt's 25% to pay interest off (thus spreading the cost for councils over a longer period), while addressing the health issues immediately. The loan is repaid when the home is sold or after 10 years. With homes doubling in value every 10 years, the owner does not lose out much and ca choose to refinance. Its like student loans for houses. If its good enough for students, why not leaky property. Its something I suggested back in mid-May. Great to see others see the logic in it. We have been devastated by our leaky home. Colin Craigs idea of interest free loans would have been a huge help to us. It's been hard to believe that something totaly out of our control has us facing bankruptcy. Although people feel for us this is no help to us at all. It is toataly unfair that those in this situation recieve no help in this devasting position. To add insult to injury there are those out there making huge money from others who have the misfortune to end up in this unfortuate situation.
We married young and were high acheivers who have worked hard to gain what we have. We built our home in 1992 under an insufficient building code that was in place at the time and do not come under the 10 year cut off point from the Government. We face the fact that we will loose everything.
