A fire has damaged a supermarket in the Mangere Bridge area.
Nearby resident Jon Baulcomb saw a huge plume of smoke from his house and thought it was an explosion, but it turned out to be a fire at Mangere Bridge SuperValue supermarket on Coronation Rd.
“I just saw a plume of cloud rising a couple of metres in to the air.”
Mr Baulcomb believes there had been an electrician on site at the time but wasn’t sure if that was connected to the explosion.
He says he believes no one was hurt in the fire, but thinks the supermarket has major damage.
“There was smoke pouring out of all areas of the roof.”
Northern Fire Communications shift inspector Scott Osmond confirmed there was a fire at the rear part of the SuperValue supermarket and the Fire Service had been called to the scene at 11.50am this morning. He says it was not an explosion.
He says six fire appliances were attending the scene and the fire was now under control.
He says the damage to the building should not be huge.
“The building is not written off.”
Mr Osmond did not yet know the cause of the fire and said a Fire Safety Officer would be going to assess the scene.
