By this time next year, Auckland will be the largest Australasian city under the control of one council. The new super mayor will be hugely important and wield a massive amount of power. 60 Minutes reporter Rod Vaughan talks to the candidates already on the campaign trail.

Go Robyn Malcom. Can't think of anyone more logical. If shes not interested, maybe she could think of contending the Christchurch Mayoralty?

Lived in Auckland, been there done that, in the mid 1980's, flated with who might have been the child of political royalty, can't remember, obviously not that influential or forward thinking. If I were to live in Auckland again, Robyn Malclm at the helm, would certainly be refreshing. If any of the other main contenders get in, I really feel sorry for the Jaffas, but you will bring it about yourselves.

A supersized city under a mega-mayor is a frightening prospect. I though Penny Hulse raised most valid concerns about the 'threat to community democracy' and the 'not-so-hidden' privatisation adgenda. A good report.

@ Ro Edge Come on buddy, your sad rant is a little emotional.

The only person that looked like a real candidate for the Super City Mayor was Penny Hulse. I dont think for a minute she really meant Robyn Malcom. I expect to see her anounce that she is running. Shes got my vote.

John Banks couldn't answer the question about whether he wants to sell Auckland's assets. He claims to have changed, but no one can trust this man.

Penny Hulse, said that the Super City needed a good Westie Woman. Sure she said Robyn Malcom (Who incidentally is politically involved as well as being an actress). Penny is also a good Westie Woman who would do a damn fine job as Mayor. She could have just as easily been refering to herself.

So Penny Pulse, the Waitakere Deputy Mayor, doesn't want to see a celebrity end up as the Auckland mayor, but then when asked who would make a good Mayor suggests Robyn Malcolm. Hold on - isn't she a celebrity?? Ahhh, but she's a lefty so it doesn't count. Go figure!
