A heavy downpour of rain hit Wellington just after 7 o’clock this morning, flooding some streets and disrupting traffic.

The main road to Wellington Airport, Cobham Drive, was reduced to one lane each way after surface flooding.

Cars had to reduce to a snail’s pace as they made their way through the water.

Flooding has also been reported in the CBD, Kilbirnie, Karori, Haitaitai and Miramar.

The low is expected to pass over the remainder of the country by this afternoon, according to MetService spokesperson Daniel Corbett.
