In December last year we brought you the story of Winnie Cleary – the 50-year-old mum who wanted to compete in the New Zealand Ironman.
It is possibly the most brutal sport in the world – made even harder for Cleary because of a withered left leg – a result of polio as a child.
On Saturday she and 1288 other athletes travelled to Taupo to try and become an Ironman.
Starting at 7am the competitors have until midnight to complete the course.
It is an incredible race that produces so many special stories:
The 70-year-old crossing the line for the 25th time.
The man who finished despite a malignant brain tumour.
And Campbell Live reporter Helen Vaughn perhaps regretting the decision to take part.
In the end Cleary managed to finish… just in time.
“It is the hardest thing in the world,” she says, exhausted.
The last competitor is 60-year-old Jennifer Burnett who comes in at 13 minutes past midnight.
You would struggle to find someone who did not think Ms Burnett was an Ironwoman.
