The body of a 24-year-old man swept out to sea while swimming at a Wellington beach has finally been found.

Former Porirua College head boy Albert Alapati was caught in the rip at Titahi Bay while swimming with three relatives on Saturday afternoon.

Despite efforts of a surfer to hold him above the water, a wave ripped him from the surfer's grip.

Mr Alapati's relatives survived.

Police suspended their search on Wednesday afternoon, saying they were confident Mr Alapati was not in the Titahi Bay basin.

However, his body was found at Titahi Bay Beach on Thursday morning, police confirmed.
