Swimming New Zealand is expanding the reach of its high performance programme by setting up a regional centre in Wellington.
The organisation says its first regional high performance unit will be launched in January and will complement the work done at the national centre in Auckland.
High performance governance committee chairman Mark Berge says the concept of regional centres of excellence has always been part of the sport's strategic plan.
He says the Wellington centre will give swimmers an option to train in a high performance environment outside Auckland.
