Sydney nursing home fire: Death toll climbs to 9

A 90-year-old woman today became the ninth person to pass away following Friday’s fire at a Quakers Hill aged-care facility.

Neeltje Valkay passed away at Liverpool Hospital at 9.20am today.

Police have also released the name of the eighth person to pass away, 96-year-old Doris Mercy Becke.

Those residents whose names have been released are:

  • Alma Smith, 73, who died at the scene on Friday morning.
  • Lola Bennett, 86, who died at Royal North Shore Hospital on Friday afternoon.
  • Ella Wood, 97, who died at Concord Repatriation General Hospital on Saturday morning.
  • Urbana Alipio, 79, who died at Liverpool Hospital on Sunday morning.
  • Caesar Galea, 82, who died at Hawkesbury Hospital Monday morning.
  • Doris Becke, 96, who died at Blacktown Hospital last night.
  • Neeltje Valkay, 90, who died at Liverpool Hospital this morning.

Two people who died during the fire on Friday morning have not yet been formally identified.

Investigations and forensic examination at the scene continue.

Nine other residents remained in hospitals today with burns and smoke inhalation from Friday's fire, which authorities allege was set by a nurse who worked at the facility.

Nurse Roger Dean has been charged with multiple counts of murder and will appear in court on Thursday.
